Debates

During the late 19th Century, literary societies at Cornell College and across the country functioned as the first student organizations and intended to teach parliamentary procedure, etiquette and public speaking. Literary Society debates covered a range of topics, including politics and social issues. (Adapted from Finding Aid to the Literary Societies Collection, developed by Stephanie E. Schmeling.) Pictured here are scanned archival posters advertising Cornell College Literary Society debates on campus between 1890 and 1910.
